PROFILE: Alex Gorman
Meet Alex!
At St. Joseph High School in Baltimore Alex was president of his senor class, worked on the Student Activities Council to plan events throughout the school year and kept himself active with everything from theatre to play-by-play announcing at football games. At Maryland, he is a junior Business major and a founding member of the Honors Ambassadors program.
What have been some of your most memorable experiences at Maryland so far?
One of my most memorable experiences took place at the Honors pool party at the very beginning of freshman year. There, my roommate and I met what turned out to be our core group of friends, even to this day. What seemed like a random encounter, with my roommate striking up a conversation with a group of complete strangers, ended up turning out to be the start of some great and lasting friendships.
Terps games are always exciting. I especially remember when the men's basketball team upset UNC my freshman year and the entire student section poured onto the floor, and when the football team beat Boston College my sophomore year and we all rushed the field. Being a part of the sea of red among fellow Terps makes the games that much more exciting. With regard to accomplishments thus far, I am extremely proud of the development of the new Honors Ambassadors program this past year. The opportunity to turn a series of ideas into a reality was a great experience.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
After college, I would like to go into some form of marketing. Whether that will be sports marketing or otherwise, I am still not sure. Regardless, I will most likely pursue an MBA at some point and hopefully find work in a career that I really enjoy.
What sorts of things are you involved with on campus?
In addition to being a student coordinator for Honors Ambassadors, I am also a member of Maryland Images Campus Tour Guides. Not only do I love walking backwards, but sharing my excitement about UMD along with an assortment of fun facts. Did you know that there are over 780 columns on campus? I am a HONRS100 section leader, a member of the Sports Business Society, and an intern with Maryland Sports Marketing here on campus. I work on various projects in the marketing office as well as game operations on game days, which is my favorite part of the internship. I get to be on the field running the in-game promotions and contests as well as handing out giveaways and prizes. Last semester, we gave out about 12,000 glow sticks, 18,00 posters and over 15,000 T-shirts!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I'm a huge sports fan, especially the Orioles, Ravens, and Terps! When
I'm not watching a game, I like to play for fun—just throwing around
a baseball or a football. I also like to play guitar and listen to music.
What advice would you give to incoming freshman?
Be proactive. There are so many opportunities and things to do on and
off campus at UMD, but they are not going to just come to you. You have
to go out there and seek these things out. Whether it's a club, internship,
something to do on the weekends, or anything else that interests you,
it is most likely here at Maryland. Get involved as soon as you can because
time goes quickly. I'm glad I was able to get involved at first with Maryland
Images and now with the Honors Program and Sports Marketing. They have
all been great ways to make this huge campus feel smaller, and help make
the University, or at least part of it, into something I can call my own.
Enjoy your time at UMD and GO TERPS!
