HONORS 100

What is Honors 100?

HONR100 is a 1-credit, first-semester colloquium that meets for 1.5 hours each week and guides new students through the process of navigating a 1,200-acre campus, bringing their academic skills up to the college level, planning their courses and extracurriculars, and many other practical concerns.

Our goal is to welcome new students and give them a strong sense of belonging to the campus and the Honors Program. We also want to give them the information they need, not only to be successful in college, but also to be responsible for their own education and take advantage of the wide range of exceptional opportunities our campus and the surrounding Washington, DC area offer.

HONR100 encourages students to think broadly about the value of education and what it means to be an educated, engaged person. Students learn to think of themselves as campus and global citizens and to plan their education accordingly, gaining the knowledge and skills they need to live and work in a diverse and rapidly changing world.

Dr. Cathy W. Barks, an Associate Director in Honors, and Doug Kern, who teaches in the Freshman Writing Program, direct the HONR100 program, develop the curriculum, organize the training of Section Leaders, and link HONR100 with other campus programs and resources.
