GEMSTONE
Gemstone is a smaller, more structured program within University Honors. All Gemstone students are admitted to University Honors and, in addition, are invited to participate in the 4-year Gemstone program. Gemstone involves team research projects on topics at the interface of technological and social issues, guided by a faculty mentor and culminating in a team thesis written and presented at the end of senior year.
Gemstone hosts multidisciplinary teams of students from such diverse majors as English, Engineering, History, Computer Science, Business, Biochemistry, and Government and Politics.
These teams undertake research projects examining issues of major societal importance drawn from areas such as urban planning, environmental science, telecommunications, criminal justice, medicine, and manufacturing. The program gives participants the chance to learn about the relationships between technology and business, law, social structures, and politics.
Participating students have the option of a residential living/learning experience. Students who successfully complete this rigorous program will receive their Honors Citation as well as a Gemstone Citation.
Gemstone students have all of the rights, privileges, and resources available to University Honors students, including access to Honors courses, residence halls, facilities, programming and events, advising, academic support, scholarships, grants, and awards.
