HONORS ART GALLERY AWARD

Announcing the 2008 Honors Visual Art Gallery Awards!!

The Honors Visual Arts Gallery recognizes the outstanding work of Honors student artists and displays their creative work in Honors community spaces. In the spring semester of each academic year, Honors holds an open submission for works of art to be displayed on walls in Honors Buildings. Submissions are judged and selected by a juried panel of faculty and student peers. The piece of art may be completed prior to submission, or an idea/concept/proposal for a work to be done over the summer may be submitted. Up to seven artists will be selected for the 2008 awards; each will receive a cash prize of $400. Honors will work with the artists to achieve appropriate framing, and a plaque will be attached listing the artist's name, date of the work, and piece title. The work will be permanently exhibited in Honors public space and will belong to Honors. Please check out previous years' winners displayed in the basement lounge and faculty office of Anne Arundel Hall and in the Honors Humanities Office in Wicomico.

Criteria: 1] Applicants for this award must be Honors students (including University Honors, Honors Humanities, Gemstone). Applicants may already have earned their Honors Citations, but must not be final semester seniors. 2] The size and form of the artwork must be compatible with the walls of Honors common spaces. Two dimensional works are preferred. 3] Each student may submit as many works as they wish. 4] If the work of art is not yet complete, students will have six months to finish their proposed piece. Those awardees will receive $200 to purchase materials; when the work of art is presented to Honors the artist will receive another $200.

Applications are due by email to honors@umd.edu or dropped off at the Honors Office in Anne Arundel Hall by 4:30 p.m. on 4 April, 2008. Please include your name, email address, major(s), affiliated Honors program (University Honors, Honors Humanities, or Gemstone), and your expected date of graduation. Please write a description (1 page or less) of your work, giving its title and addressing its aesthetic and conceptual character, dimensions (can be approximate), and medium/material. Also include a visual sketch of the proposed piece or an image of the finished work. If you wish, you may include images of works from your portfolio if you have one.
The Honors Student Art Gallery and annual awards are supported by the generous donations of Honors parents, friends, and alumnae.
