HONR 299W Shakespeare in the Context
of Renaissance Women’s Culture
Tuesday/Thursday 2 - 3:15 p.m.
Dr. Jane Donawerth, Department of English, Distinguished
Scholar Teacher
In this course we will read and discuss four plays by
Shakespeare (Richard III, As You Like It, Othello, and The Winter's
Tale) in conjunction with early modern women's writings and secondary
sources on Renaissance history and gender. Women writers will include
Anne Askew, Elizabeth Cary, Katherine Philips, and Jane Anger. Historical
materials cover gender and women's roles, witchcraft, motherhood, ways
women published, etc. Students will read two more plays outside of class.
Assignments: Students will write three 5-7 pp. interpretive
papers on a Shakespeare play (with research) with a required revision
for the first paper, and will work together on panels to lead discussion
of secondary materials. There will be a readings journal instead of
a final or tests. We will attend a Shakespeare play as a class.
