FALL
2007 HONORS COURSES
HONR 279N China
Monday, 3:30-6:00 p.m.
Dr. John Newman, Lecturer in University Honors
This course is an examination of one of the world’s
longest surviving cultures: China. We will study Chinese myths, the
remarkable accomplishments of ancient China, the rise and fall of China’s
many traditional dynasties, and modern China’s turbulent and lengthy
collision with the West.
The course has many foci, from its history and politics,
to its economics, arts, and culture. We will examine the lengthy number
of Chinese innovations, from movable print, to gunpowder, and astronomy.
We will work with Chinese characters, read Chinese literature,
watch Chinese films, eat Chinese food, and attend, when available and
appropriate, Chinese cultural events in Washington.
