HONR 279P Understanding and Coping
with Stress
Tuesday/Thursday, 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Dr. David Hyde, Department of Public and Community Health
Today, stress seems to be a fact of life. What conscientious
college student is not “stressed-out”? Like a shadow, it seems to be
lurking everywhere: during an exam, a job interview, a class presentation,
driving on the beltway, finding a place to park, relating to others.
Moreover, stress affects how well we function on a daily basis: our
ability to concentrate and think, our behaviors, and most importantly
our health. Even though it is difficult for many people to accept, stress
is in the eye of the beholder. Nobody has the luxury of a stress-free
life; however, some cope better than others. Why? How? This seminar
will focus on coping with the stressors of everyday life. Through reading
and discussion students will examine a variety of strategies effective
in minimizing the impact of stress.
