Spring 2003 HONR Course Descriptions - HONR 229D

HONR 229D Global Security and Disarmament: Where do we go From Here?
Tuesday/Thursday, 2:00-3:15 p.m.
Dr. Natalie J. Goldring, Department of Government and Politics

Are you concerned that guns, chemical, biological, and conventional weapons, and perhaps even nuclear materiel seem to be available around the globe? Are you ready to consider how another war with Iraq and responses to terrorist attacks might affect the prospects for security and disarmament? If so, you should consider taking this course.

This course focuses on security and disarmament policy choices for the coming decade. We will not cover all dimensions of these issues. Instead, we will deal with a few key cases and examine their interrelationships and the challenges they pose for policy-makers.

Course requirements:
Course requirements are likely to include two short papers, a final paper or exam, and class participation. Students will also participate in a simulation exercise. Potential simulation examples include a global summit on terrorism, a United Nations Security Council debate over an emerging nuclear power, or negotiation of a treaty between the United States and a regional power.

Readings will provide diverse perspective on current events related to global security and disarmament; many will be web-based. Students will also be expected to read the relevant news and opinion articles in the Washington Post each day.

Tentative readings:
Joseph Cirincione with Joh B. Wolfsthal and Miriam Rajkumar, Deadly Arsenals: Tracking Weapons of Mass Destruction
Randall Forsberg and Elise Boulding, Abolishing War
Michael Klare and Yogesh Chandrani, World Security: Challenges for a New Century

CORE Distributive Studies, Behavioral and Social Science [SB]
